SC. 8 - TERM 3
Feb. 6/10
- For the 2 new Science 8 classes we did a short orientation session to the science lab, including Safety Rules and locations of Safety Equipment. We also did introductions, classroom rules, teacher expectations and answering of any questions the students had.
- Introduction to UNIT 4 - WATER SYSTEMS ON EARTH
- Discussion of student knowledge of water
- Starting filling in a "K-W-L" Chart (What I Know, What I Need to Know, What I've Learned)
- Students used sticky note pads to write down their most significant fact about water and stuck them on a chart on the walls
- Completed the second column of K-W-L Chart with the Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLO's)
- Watched the first segment of the documentary movie: Flow
- Students discussed their reactions to the documentary
- Students used their K-W-L charts to record what they had learned from the documentary
- Students used sticky notes to write down their most remarkable new fact they had learned from the documentary and posted it on the wall chart (this was also their 'exit ticket' for the day). We will review these new facts next class.
February 11/12
- Watched Bill Nye Video on "The Water Cycle" and discussed the key concepts at various points throughout the video
- Completed a video worksheet, reviewed and discussed the answers
- Did the FIND OUT ACTIVITY on p. 359 "The Many Ways People Use Water"
February 13/16
- Continued watched the documentary "Flow" - students took their own notes when video was paused to emphasize KEY CONCEPTS
- Discussion time for new information from the video
- Students recorded the new information they had learned on their KWL Charts and filled out 1 sticky note with info on something they felt passionate about from the documentary. This was their "Exit Ticket" today
- Presented the driving question for their upcoming project: "How do we raise awareness about threats to bodies of water through images/internet?
- Class brainstormed ideas on the driving question above
- Discussed various social protests currently happening around the world that are related to resource management
- Watched a video clip entitled: "Stop the Pipeline: The Rise Against Keystone XL", as an example of protests and contraversies
February 17/18
- Continued watching the documentary "Flow" - students took their own notes when video was paused to emphasize KEY CONCEPTS
- Discussion time for new information from the video
- Discussion on how to raise awareness about threats to bodies of water through images/internet
- Discussion about what makes a good public awareness campaign
- Watched a video about the "Ocean Cleanup" project started by Boyan Slat - a 19 year old student who has a passion for cleaning the plastic out of the world's oceans
February 19/23
- Continued watching the documentary "Flow" - students took their own notes when video was paused to emphasize KEY CONCEPTS
- Discussion time for new information from the video
- Discussion on how to raise awareness about threats to bodies of water through images/internet
- Discussion about what makes a good public awareness campaign
- Learned about the "CRAAP TEST" - a test that evaluates the quality of information on the Internet
- Learned about how to use the "CORNELL NOTE TAKING SYSTEM" - A useful study skill that can be used throughout life for learning
- Students had time to make teams for the upcoming project and discuss which body of water they may be interested in studying
February 24/25
- Watched the last segment of the documentary "Flow" - students took notes - discussed KEY CONCEPTS
- Applied the CRAAP Test to the website "Save the Pacific Northwestern Tree Octopus" - this was followed by a discussion on what a website has to have and not have in order to pass the CRAAP Test
- Students investigated Nestles current activities in Ontario related to the "Privatization of Water"
- Handed out the water project checklist "How do We Raise Awareness About Threats to Bodies of Water Through Images?"
- Class formed teams and registered their chosen bodies of water to investigate with the teacher
February 26/27
- Went over details related to the Water Project the class started last day
- Discussed the term "salinity" and how to find information about this for chosen body of water
- Handed out the form "Student & Team Member Self-Evaluation of Collaboration" and went over how to complete it
- Day 1 of research time for projects - remember to record website identifying information which will be entered into EASYBIB to create a Bibliography. Apply the CRAAP Test to your chosen websites (you should use at least 3 reputable websites, 5 is even better). You should do enough research so that you feel like an "expert" on your body of water.
March 2/3
- Continued to work on the Water Project
- Today's objectives: hand in notes including a list of references (websites used for information); start working on your proposal for a public awareness campaign that is designed to bring attention to the threat to your chosen body of water; complete and hand in the "Self and Team Member Evaluation Form" for today's class
March 4/5
- Continued work on the Water Project
- Today's objectives: Start typed report based on the information collected in your notes from the websites you used for research purposes. Your report should be about 1,500 - 2,000 words long. It must include general information about the body of water that is important and sets your body of water apart from others. There must also be plenty of details about the threat or threats to the ecological health of your chosen aquatic environment. Also include a clear description of what you intend to do to bring public awareness to the problem(s) the water is threatened by and how it is effecting humans, animals, plants, and possibly the entire planet. End you report with a good summary and/or conclusion of your research findings.
- The class went through all the steps on their laptops involved in using "BIBME" to create the bibliography for the research report. BIBME is located on the GESS website in the Library link.
March 6/9
- Continue work on Water Project
- Today's objectives: Last day for class time to work on the written report section of this project (see the details from the previous class)
- Reviewed how to use BIBME for creating a Bibliography
- Went over the marking criteria for the Water Project, including note taking and research, written report, bibliography, collaborative work, Prezi or PowerPoint, and presentations
March 10/11
- INTERIM REPORTS WERE HANDED OUT TO ALL STUDENTS DURING CLASS THIS WEEK
- Viewed website: http://action.sumofus.org/a/bc-bottled-water/?sub=fb and discussed the impact of the company "Nestles" tapping the groundwater in British Columbia. Some students decided to sign the petition on this website to express their disagreement with our government's response.
- Today was Day 1 of 2 for work on the PREZI or POWERPOINT section of the Water Project. Each team should have at least 8 quality images for their presentation with labels or point form information describing the images.
- Hand in written report for the Water Project (make sure the Bibliography is attached at the end of your report)
March 12/13
- Today was Day 2 of 2 for work on the PREZI or POWERPOINT section of the Water Project. Each team should have at least 8 quality images for their presentation with labels or point form information describing the images. (NOTE: Due to the EARLY DISMISSAL AT 1:30 for parent/teacher interviews, another half class will be dedicated to finalizing the PREZI or POWERPOINT section)
- Hand in written Reports - today we went over the "Evaluation Criteria Checklist" for the written report
- If PREZI or POWERPOINT is complete, hand it in to the HAND IN FOLDER ON THIS WEBSITE.
